Download a flyer for the 2008 APAS Children's
Holiday Party, to be held December 6th at
Clearview Mall.
The Holiday season is around the corner! APAS closes the year with a holiday party for our little ones!
Our 3rd Annual APAS Children's Holiday Party is set for Saturday, December 6th and I am organizing it!
For those who didn't know, this party was originally put together for the benefit of our adopted asian children. This is a place where parent's of adopted asian kids can bring their children and expose them to their rich asian culture- something that they may have limited means of doing.
We have slowly opened it up to our members to enable more children to mingle amongst themselves. This year, I would like to continue the tradition and give an open invitation to our members' children. Admission will be limited, therefore, an RSVP is recommended.
Please mark your calendars and plan to attend.
Lastly, I need some volunteers ready to play and have fun with the kids. I already have activites and performances lined up, you are more than welcome to select how much or how little you can help.
Thank you and see y'all very soon,
Joana Manalac (apasnola@gmail.com)

Director Ham Tran and community members will be present for a discussion session. From refugees to evacuees - the struggle of Southeast Asians on the Gulf Coast from 1975-2008. Was escape from the war different from escape from Katrina? Inspired by true stories of Vietnamese refugees who fled their land after the fall of Saigon - and those who were forced to stay behind - Journey From The Fall follows one family's struggle for freedom. This movie powerfully illustrates the experiences of the Vietnamese population after the fall of Saigon, leaving a war-torn country and starting a new life in a foreign land, the United States. Hope unites them all.
Please RSVP for event at apasnola@gmail.com.
Please come join APAS this Saturday for story telling and activities for kids. This will be a wonderful activity for both adults and kids. Professor Wajuppa Tossa has spent the last decade collecting, preserving, training, and telling traditional stories from around the world for kids of all ages. Even at Thursday's presentation where all the audiences were adults, her skills as a story teller got us in touch with our inner child side. We laughed throughout the whole presentation and even learned how to say a couple of Thai/Lao words. Saturday will be a fun and educational day for children. Hope to see you there! 1pm-2pm Arts activities for kids (ballooning/painting)
2pm-2pm Story telling to children. Stories are from all over the world.
**snacks will be provided**

Socheata Poeuv grew up in Texas and knew little about her early life until her parents gathered the family at Christmas in 2002. They revealed that she wasn't actually related to her sisters and shared only one parent with her brother. Her parents had survived Pol Pot's labor camps in Cambodia . Eventually they escaped to Thailand , where she was born, then the United States . The revelation reopens many questions that Socheata's parents had never answered for her. In this documentary, she takes them back on an emotional journey through their homeland where the Khmer Rouge killed an estimated 1.7 million Cambodians. She discovers much about herself and the tumultuous times her parents survived. Free admission. -- Will Coviello

Innovation, improvisation and collaboration are critical ingredients for recovery. New approaches to problem-solving in Japan and the United States are helping people envision a better future, whether it's a community coping with natural disaster or an individual rebounding from homelessness. This symposium explores the art of recovery from a range of different perspectives, keying off of conversations with members of the U.S.-Japan Innovators Network, including Rosanne Haggerty, founder of the supportive housing non-profit Common Ground Community, Kohei Nishiyama, CEO of design-to-order company elephant design, Marty Ashby, Executive Producer of MCG Jazz, and Jay Weigel, Executive/Artistic Director for the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. Co-organized with MCG Jazz, Contemporary Arts Center, The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership and The Japan Society.
