Japanese in New Orleans

The New Orleans Japanese community numbers between two hundred and five hundred people, depending on the numbers of business executives and foreign students in the city at any one time. Many of the Japanese nationals are war brides from Okinawa and Japan who married servicemen stationed overseas in the late 1940's and 1950's. Others are nisei, or second-generation Japanese-Americans who came from the West Coast, resettling primarily in New Orleans after World War II. Forced from their homes in California, Oregon, and Washington in the era's anti-Japan frenzy, they were sent to one of the ten War Relocation Camps located in Arkansas, Wyoming, Nebraska, and other states. After the war, rather than returning to their former homes, they spread throughout the country. Several families found their way to New Orleans.

Most of the Japanese here work either with foreign diplomatic services or as businesspeople.
