Bangladesh citizens started coming to New Orleans in the late
1960's. Many arrived as graduate students at local universities, especially Tulane, when
the country was still a part of Pakistan. When the civil war broke out, a number of the
students simply stayed in New Orleans. Currently, the Bangladesh community numbers about
150 to 175 in New Orleans, plus another 250 in the Baton Rouge area. They are successful
professionals, securing good positions as engineers, doctors, or college professors, often
marrying into the Indian community.
